New Food & Wine Food Photo Contest

I’m a bit irked with Food & Wine.com right now. They replaced their little blogwatch thing that used to do a nice job of showcasing some of the cool stuff out there, and made it all internal links to their own stuff. So, the one draw the website always had for me, no longer brings me there. Oh, well. Their loss.

I do subscribe to the print magazine though, and I just noticed that they’ve just announced a new food photo contest. The last one was pretty cool, not only for the winner, who received a Canon Digital Rebel, but also for a bunch of folks who got to have their photos featured in a gallery on the Food & Wine website. This time, the focus is on travel food photography, and you can win a Samsung Smart Phone. It’s a great theme, and one that is often overlooked when food photography contests are run. I can’t wait to see what the results are!

Photos must be entered by the end of May, and you can find out more on the Food & Wine website.

Gary Fong eat your heart out!

No, I think Gary Fong is great, I love this photography, and I love his products.. so I don’t really want him to eat anything.

But! Cyndal walked into my bedroom last night and held up a small CD container. She said “Do you need this for anything”… I had just been thinking about buying a Gary Fong Lightsphere and a small light went on in my head! I could make one myself, kinda. So I said yes, she asked what for, and I explained I wanted to make a Lightsphere.. She didn’t look very impressed at all, and told me “You have 2 days!”. So this morning I woke up, grabbed my handy-dandy craft knife, and made this thing:

I call it the JohngDong! :P Here are some sample images:

It’s AWESOME! It’s pretty hard to fit in my camera bag though.. so I think I’ll just go buy a Lightsphere.. But it was fun to make. :)

Olympus E-410 Review

The E-410 offers ease-of-shooting and greater flexibility with the Live View LCD. Composing photographs is easier as subjects can be seen on the Live View LCD, which offers a wide 176-degree viewing angle. This enables images to be effortlessly taken from angles that would typically be difficult with a traditional optical viewfinder — which is still the only option on many competing digital SLR cameras. Interacting with subjects, such as toddlers and pets, is also possible thanks to the Live View LCD, which enables pictures to be taken while holding the camera away from your face.

The E-410’s big and bright 2.5-inch LCD display with approximately 230,000 pixels includes HyperCrystal technology, which offers many times the contrast of conventional LCD monitors, and enables images to be beautifully displayed in vivid color — both in preview and playback. The HyperCrystal LCD also provides a wide viewing angle, which ensures images can be composed from even the most obscure angles. The larger LCD makes viewing icons and text on the camera’s menu a squint-free process.

Coupled with the underwater housing, the Live View LCD also makes underwater photography easy, where looking through a traditional optical viewfinder is extremely inconvenient.
