Big, high-performance cameras are getting smaller, lighter, and less expensive, our latest tests show. And now you can choose from at least two distinct types.
Our most highly recommended single-lens reflex camera, the Nikon D40, weighs little more than a pound and costs just $560, lens included. That’s hundreds less than most SLRs, and more cameras in that price range are on the way.
We also found two big and versatile point-and-shoot cameras from Fujifilm, which we term “SLR-like,” that offer many of an SLR’s benefits for a lot less money.
When it comes to capturing a shot quickly in challenging conditions, nothing beats an SLR digital camera. Most SLR-like models lack some SLR features such as large image sensors and an optical through-the-lens viewfinder, and aren’t as fast off the mark when the shutter is pressed, but share several advantages with their brethren.

A sports-orientated mini digital camcorder that’s lightweight, pocketable and has a rubberised shell has been unveiled by Samsung in Korea.
The Samsung VM-X300 can record DVD-like and MPEG4 ASP video at 720 x 480 pixels resolution and 30 frames per second.
The Samsung VM-X300 is designed for capturing footage when out and about. Its rubber-feel casing gives it a bit of extra protection for outdoors sports-types. It can be ready to record in less than 3 seconds of being switched on.

At the moment, details of the palm-sized camcorder are sparse. There are no dates or prices confirmed yet for a UK release.

Great use of slow shutter speed. Also like how the lighting and colors work.

The Japanese electronics and entertainment company is looking to slash capital expenditures at its semiconductor operations from the Y440 billion it spent over the last three fiscal years. Costs ballooned as Sony poured cash into a myriad of projects, including development of the brainy central processor for its PlayStation 3 game console.
This led to heavy losses in its chip business, but Sony has said its semiconductor operations will post an operating profit this fiscal year through March 2008.
The latest investment is part of the company’s efforts to focus on three main areas: image sensors that serve as the “electronic eyes” of digital cameras and camera phones, advanced circuits for electronic products like TVs, and more cost efficient components for its pricey game consoles.
Sony plans to boost output capacity at a plant in Kumamoto Prefecture in southern Japan, where it makes imaging sensors, said a company spokesman.
It will make the investment over a three-year period starting in the current fiscal year that began in April, he said. The bulk of the investment is to come next fiscal year through March 2009.
