Tutorial: Alien Skin

Tutorial: "Alien Skin"
Program: Photoshop CS3
Skill Level: Advanced
Approximate Time : 4 hours or more
Keywords: Photoshop, Sci-Fi, Photography, Photo Manipulation

My friend Shairah is an actress and model and recently had some professional photos taken. She generously allowed me to use these photos to experiment with in Photoshop. For this particular project, I was attempting to create an alien skin effect. Using a combination of brushes, dodging techniques and various textures, I successfully achieved my goal.

The Final Image

The Original

Before we start I duplicate the original picture (Apple/Command + J). This gives me an untouched reference photo, or something I can go back to in case of a mistake. It's good practice to always do this when working on photo manipulations.

Step 1 "Desaturate"

My first step was to desaturate the skin. Desaturating the whole photo makes the image look too flat and boring so instead I choose the Sponge Tool (O) and set the Mode to "Desaturate". Select the brush size best appropriate for your photo, changing frequently to get really detailed. I choose a low flow setting of "20%" because I didn't want to over do the technique.

1-1

It's tedious but taking the time to sponge the flesh better allows for certain nuances that would potentially occur in...

The Disappearance Of Group M35

Post By Origin | July 5, 2007

Some who read this are already aware of the abrupt disappearance of Group M35, but I feel it is necessary to address the photographic community as a whole concerning the events that have unfolded in recent months.

In November of 2003, Charles Clark and myself began what was to eventually become Group M35, quite literally, in our living room. The intent was to build a place for those of us who took great care and pride in our work. A community where an artist could feel at home and find support from like minded photographers. It was our goal to provide a place for the work that does not belong in the archive of Corbis or Getty.

The result, unfortunately, bares little resemblance to the original idea. It has been made overwhelmingly clear that Group M35 is no longer and in fact never was a viable entity. The New York and San Francisco studios has been shutdown, and nearly all of the members have resigned, and their respective material returned.

I cannot help but feel responsible for the current state of things. Many of the issues that have lead us to this point I have been aware of for sometime. I wanted to believe that we would one day be a successful self-sustaining organization. Unfortunately, that desire blinded me to the reality of the situation, and like the rest of those in the group, I had no idea just...

The work of which I am most proud…

Robert N. Dechene, 23 / Army – Tour of duty 7/16/67 – 9/17/67

Raymond A. Borduas, 20 / Marine – tour of duty 5/5/68 – 6/4/68

Of all the work (photographically) I have done, these two mages are what I am most proud of.

Though they have little to do necessarily with photographic skills, the families thought them to be wonderful “pictures”.

I was a green beret during Vietnam, so the fact that seven boys (literally) from the small town in Maine where I live did not come home is of significance to me.

After more than 30 years (and for the first time) I finally visited the Vietnam War Memorial. While there I took a picture of the panels that have the names of two of those young men inscribed on them.

In Photoshop I:

1. Burnt all but their names
2. Painted their names white
3. Took one of their old pictures and converted it to digital
4. Combined their old photo with the photo of the wall that bore their name

It was difficult at times working on these images, having these young men literally “looking” back at me… and at one point the Pink Floyd song “Wish You Were Here” came on the radio… I will save you the details; suffice it to say I was glad no

Panasonic - Which? awards 2007

Which? awards ‘the best of the best’ in products and services

In its fiftieth year, for the first time consumer watchdog Which? has presented awards to the very best products and services in the UK.

Panasonic scooped two awards, winning the Best Audio Visual Brand and a special Heritage Award for achieving the most Which? Best Buy recommendations since Which? magazine was first published in 1957.

The winners were announced at a ceremony held at the British Museum on the 27th June. Compered by broadcaster Fiona Bruce, there was a presentation from Richard Lambert, Director General of the CBI, and the Rt Hon Gordon Brown also provided a special recorded message of support for the event.

Said Which? on Panasonic’s achievement for winning the Best Audio-Visual Brand Award:

“In an ever-changing industry, Panasonic has managed to impress us consistently with its innovation and reliability."

“Panasonic achieved a massive 15 Best Buys this year, so if you’re looking to invest your hard-earned cash, you can’t really go wrong choosing Panasonic.”

Which? went on to comment on Panasonic receiving the Heritage Award:

“The Heritage award is the result of our search for an outstanding company that has achieved the most Best Buys since Which? began in 1957."

“Outshining its competitors with an impressive 222 Best Buys across a wide range...
