Nikon Coolpix P5000

Nikon Coolpix P5000

While D-SLRs get the headlines, compact point-and-shoot digicams outsell them by almost 15 to one. Price is a big reason and many people simply don’t want the hassle of interchangeable lenses or carrying a bulky camera around. For these folks, the Coolpix P5000 is the proverbial top of Nikon’s aim-and-forget series. With a street price of around $350 USD, this camera has 10-megapixel resolution, a 3.5x zoom, optical image stabilization, 3200 ISO and lots of other goodies. They’re all packaged in very retro, rangefinder-like body. How does this new 2007 edition hold up? Let’s power it up and see…

Histograms: Huh?

Here is an interesting post from Aaron at SingleServingPhoto on the use and interpretation of histograms. Enjoy

"I don’t think there is a single digital photographer who hasn’t, at one time or another, looked at a histogram (much like the one below) and thought What the fuzz is this thing trying to tell me? If that describes you, or if you just want to know more about this ubiquitous and curious graph, you’ve come to the right place.

Today I will unclothe the common histogram and show you not only how to read it, but also how you can use it to strengthen your work."

Security update for Photoshop available

From John Nack's blog

" Adobe has posted a security update for Photoshop CS2 and CS3 that addresses a potential vulnerability reported earlier this year. We're not aware of anyone having been affected by the vulnerability, but obviously we don't want to leave it unpatched, so it's a good idea to take a minute to run this update. It consists of revised versions of the plug-ins that read BMP, PNG, RLE, DIB, and Targa files. "

Tip: Website Validation

One of the best kept secrets one the web for designers is a little known tool called 'NetRenderer'. It's a tool that allows you to see what your website looks like in various versions of Internet Explorer. For web designers using Macs, one of the biggest pains is having to check your sites in IE, especially if you don't have an extra PC lying around. This has typically been solved by frequent trips to the library, friends houses, or through other techniques. Geotek's NetRenderer however, is a free useful application for validating your sites in IE7.

Check it out here. From the site:

IE NetRenderer allows you to check how a website is rendered by Internet Explorer 7, 6 or 5.5, as seen from a high speed datacenter located in Germany. Just type in a URL in the field above and try it out - it's free!

Unlike other screenshot services, we are able to process a large number of capturing jobs in parallel and in realtime, making it the fastest service that we know of.

This web rendering tool is ideally suited for web designers working on Apple iMac and Linux workstations. It allows to verify web designs natively on all popular Internet Explorer versions, without the need to set aside several physical or virtual Microsoft Windows PCs just for that purpose
