STW Flicker challenge for September: A Room for Food

With my recent move, it’s not surprising that I’ve been thinking about spaces to shoot almost nonstop over the past few weeks. I have a new small studio dedicated to my photography, as well as a small area off the kitchen with lovely morning light. Both are going to be great… once I get used them and learn their unique lighting ins and outs. Right now, I’m kind of pulling my hair out trying to relearn how to shoot after a few weeks “off”, finding out if I can live with the wall colors or need to repaint, and coming up with a new natural light diffusion system.

So, in the spirit of celebrating the places that you shoot, let’s back up and get some context. Your shots should still be food still lifes, but back up a bit and incorporate some of the more interesting characteristics of where you shoot. Maybe the edge of a window, or the kitchen sink. Give your food some room!

The usual rules and are up on the Flickr group… the things like be constructive, take the photos during the month if possible, 3 photos per person and the last day will be around September 30th, give or take a few days.

Tutorial: Reflective Bubbles

For my most recent work I wanted to create bubbles that would reflect my subject in a believable yet magical way. To do this I started by duplicating the main photo Layer >> Duplicate Layer.

Next I scaled the duplicate to 25% of it's original size. Edit >> Transform >> Scale. We also need to distort the duplicate. First I flipped it Edit >> Transform >> Flip Horizontal or Vertical, then I distorted it further by adjusting the perspective. Edit >> Transform >> Perspective

Still doesn't look like a bubble does it? Here comes the fun part. Select the elliptical tool (M) and draw out an area that's a perfect sphere (by holding shift). We want to get rid of everything outside of the bubble, now. So go to the to menu and choose "Select" then "Inverse" (Select >> Inverse) then press delete. You've now deleted everything on the layer that will not be in the bubble.

Press Command + D to deselect everything then Command click on the layer of the bubble. You should now have only the sphere selected.

Now, the most important part of the process, distorting your image to be a sphere by using the "Spherize" option. select Filter >> Distort >> Spherize. Use a setting of 100%.

Now, click on your color window....

Book Review: Photoshop Lightroom Adventure by Mikkel Aaland

Photoshop Lightroom Adventure began as an idea by award-winning photographer and the author of nine books, Mikkel Aaland. Aaland, a pioneer in digital photography since 1980, asked Ansel Adams in an interview what he would pursue if Adams was just starting out. Adams began discussing the ideas of digital photographs. Aaland has pursued this topic ever since.

As a beta tester for Lightroom in 2006 and knowing that he was going to write a book on the subject, Aaland also knew that there would be seven or eight other books to compete against. Instead of just writing a standard how-to book, he talked to the people at O'Reilly about putting together an excursion to a far-off land and inviting professional photographers to go along and see how they all used Lightroom (still in beta) in a real live environment. Soon Adobe became involved and the project became the O'Reilly Photoshop Lightroom Iceland Adventure and the book became Photoshop Lightroom Adventure

Photoshop Lightroom Adventure is divided into 12 chapters and 332 pages along with an introduction and a forward by George Jardine; Pro Photo evangelist for Adobe

By Mike Ross and crew. This was one of the largest art pieces on the playa this year. People were encouraged to actually climb up into the tanker sections once the piece was completed.

Canon EOS 40D Image Gallery

This an image gallery for my 40D review. All the photos were shot in RAW and converted to jpeg with Canon Digital Photo Professional. The jpeg files were then resized and sharpened in Photoshop CS3.

The History of Photoshop

The program, Photoshop, whose splash screen now displays 41 names was originally the product of just two brothers. In 1987, Thomas Knoll began writing a program on his Macintosh Plus. The project started as a thesis on the processing of digital images, and evolved first into a small set of graphical subroutines, and then into a program named Display which caught the attention of his brother John Knoll, an Industrial Light & Magic employee, who recommended Thomas turn it into a fully functional image editing software. Thomas took a six month break from his studies in 1988 to collaborate with his brother on the program, which had been renamed ImagePro. Later that year, Thomas renamed his program Photoshop and worked out a short-term deal with scanner manufacturer Barneyscan to distribute copies of the program (under the name Barneyscan XP) with their scanners.

Thomas and John Knoll

Fortunately for the future of digital imaging, this wasn't a long-term deal, and John soon returned to Adobe to drum up more interest. There he met Russell Brown, then Art Director, who was highly impressed with the program and persuaded the company to take it on. Whether through naivety on Adobe’s part or canniness on the brothers’, Photoshop was not sold wholesale but only licensed and distributed, with royalties still going
