Canon EOS 40D High ISO Noise Reduction Test

The 40D has a new custom function that allows you to set noise reduction for high ISO. I have made some test shots comparing shots from ISO 800 to 3200 with noise reduction off and on. The following are 100% crops, the left side crops had noise reduction turned off and right side crops had noise reduction turned on.

ISO 800

Portrait Photographer’s Handbook

Portrait Photographer's Handbook

Combining time-tested practices with contemporary methods, this guidebook details the fine art of capturing formal and casual posed images. With advice and guidance from the finest and most decorated portrait and wedding photographers in the country, this instructional discusses subjects such as lighting in the studio and on location, improving improvisational shooting techniques, and how to retouch images in the post-production process to create truly flawless looks. A chapter addressing the common problems in taking portraitures—from working with subjects with glasses to subjects that vary in size, facial features, and skin tone—is also included.

More Proce55ing Art

I created this during some downtime at the studio today...

This image was created using the Metropop, Atrractor and Particle applications in the Proce55ing environment. I've been playing with recoding the apps to do more than what they were originally written to do. The rest of the design was completed in Photoshop.

My inspiration was the Darren Arranofsky movie, The Fountain. In the movie the protagonist travels through space in an orb that carries the Tree of Life. I thought it would be interesting to create an orb that contained the universe itself. Stephen Hawking once theorized that the universe is spherical in shape much like Earth. Anyone living on the surface could easily (and did) assume that it was flat. Traveling from one side of the planet to another would never lead to an edge, thus you can never leave the planet by traveling along the surface. In the same way he suggested that the universe can never be left by 'traveling along the surface'. The secret is another form of travel which we may never discover.

Camera Raw 4.1 update

Here is some information about the new Camera Raw 4.1 update from Martin Evening

Photoshop CS3 for Photographers
Camera Raw 4.1 update

"Last month I wrote a series of feature stories for Lightroom-news.com about all the new changes to Lightroom 1.1. Although many of the changes that took place with the raw processing in the Lightroom 1.1 Develop module were identical to the changes that have taken place in Camera Raw, a lot of readers have asked if I could provide an equivalent Photoshop CS3 Adobe Camera Raw 4.1 update. What follows is a summary of what is new in the Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) interface, where I have taken the text from the Lightroom-news story and repackaged it for Photoshop users.

Clarity slider
Let’s start with the Clarity slider in the basic panel section of the Camera raw dialog. I believe Jeff Schewe campaigned hard to get this particular feature included, and as Jeff himself will tell you, Clarity is a hybrid based on two separate contrast enhancing techniques. One is a local contrast enhancement technique, devised by Thomas Knoll, using a low amount and high radius setting in the Photoshop Unsharp Mask filter. The other is a midtone

This is another shot of Odin the white Bengal Tiger at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, about ready to pounce on a chunk of meat. Odin loves the water, and meat.
