tip 8: Using textures (intermediate)

Textures are a really easy way to do something different to your standard photos. It can turn a dull picture into something artistic, but easily can be overdone. The secret is to find the right photo and add the right texture(s).

In this tutorial I will show how I got this picture

from this one.

Bit of a difference, huh?

To be honest I am not too positive how I created the first shot because I never save PSD files, though I should. But I can make something close to it.

Firstly I opened my image in photoshop and cropped it to a square format. Then I duplicated my layer and blurred it using gaussian blur and then set this layer to soft light (see tip #2). Next I added an adjustment layer (channel mixer set to monochrome and this layer set to multiply). After that my image looked something like this:

Now the fun part starts. Find some FREE textures on the web. I like to use flickr because its a good resource for ripping stuff off. With permission of course. I used two from nessters popular ttv selection, notably the first two in his set here Click to continue reading "tip 8: Using textures (intermediate)"

09/21/07: Quote of the day…

“I think about photographs as being full, or empty. You picture something in a frame and it’s got lots of accounting going on in it–stones and buildings and trees and air–but that’s not what fills up a frame. You fill up the frame with feelings, energy, discovery, and risk, and leave room enough for someone else to get in there.”

Photographer’s comment:
This is an Edinburgh Fringe photo from 2006. It features two of the incredibly talented performers from an Italian group called Kataklo (composed of former Olympic gymnasts).

About that time again!

Everybody has their own favorite apple (mine is Honeycrisp), and everyone seems to have their own favorite cider mill. In the Lansing area, you have a few options available:

Uncle John's Cider Mill: This is the big one in the area. It's a few minutes north of Lansing in Saint Johns. Seems half the time I go there is a waiting line for pretty much everything, and the place is totally overrun with people. If you want to go to the biggest mill, and the best established, this is it. No u-pick apples though.

Country Mill: This is a smaller mill and orchard, located to the southwest in Charlotte. It has a nice u-pick orchard, a working historic cider mill, and best of all for me, Honeycrisp apples in early September. Mmmm.

There are other options as well, and exploring the mills for a day is a relaxing change of pace.

Bring your digital camera or color film with you, because...

yodell ? lay-od-lay-od-lay-he-hoo, ? lay-od-lay-od-low yodellay, ? yodallay, yodal-low… ? and they fly low supreme! - 20 Sep 2007 - Flickr

okay, hi everybody! ^o^ alright, some ppl are asking a bunch of questions about telephoto lenses ^o^ and i don’t know how to start answering all but, i hope this helps… ?here’s an obvious use of a long lens, i love shooting tight or may i say that i luv isolation, like here in this frame… i was able to photograph from an approx. distance of 70 m or 220 feet, yet frame the egrets tightly! @_@ but, the yellowish hue of ?sunrise is not as pronounced as it was in other days before i made this shoot. ?by this day the intense yellows in gold tones characteristic of balinese sunrise had been lost. ?partly due to the slightly overcastted weather and, partly due to the thin ? clouds filtering the light in that specific day, in the other hand I’ve an unusual background… a great white egret in flight. ?okay, dunno why but I got so many ?emails requesting advices for choices of long lens, telling the truth i only know about my big lens ?nikkor 500mm f/4 dII? and what it’s good about it. ?but i’ve few basic points to tell you about super telephoto lenses, before you get your wallet in hands. ?think- which subjects you wish to photograph. ?think- the amount of lens weight and volume you’ve willing to carry in the field *_* backpacking or from a vehicle? ^_-… or which are your resources to go out
