Simplified Studio Lighting for Elegant Portraits

When you are new to studio portrait photography, studio lighting can seem difficult, mysterious, and perhaps even ominous at times. You may read ten different books on lighting by the “experts”, and quite likely you will get ten totally different opinions about what constitutes proper lighting. Maybe this is because “proper” lighting for studio portraits is just that; a matter of opinion. Yes, there are classic styles of lighting such as: open loop, closed loop, butterfly or Paramount, broad lighting, short lighting, and so forth.

Weather photos - tips and tricks

Here are some great tips for outdoor weather photos.

1. Check where the sun, or light source, is before you look for a vantage point from which to shoot the picture. Make sure the sun is behind you.

2. Ensure there are no shadows falling across the subject - that includes your shadow.

3. Shoot in even light so the contrast between light and shadow is not extreme:
- the human eye compensates for high contrast - a camera doesn’t.
- if the contrast is too high then shadows may come out pitch black, highlights may bleach out, and you will lose all detail.

4. Shooting objects when the weather is overcast gives soft and even lighting.

5. Bright sunlight makes small shadows extremely harsh. On bright days, it is better to try and shoot people and objects in the shade to minimise contrast.

The "rule of thirds"
Follow the ‘Rule of Thirds’ when framing shots of landscapes, events, and activities.

Avoid placing the horizon in the middle of the frame. This prevents competition between subject and background.
