10/16/07: Affordable camera / gear cases…

If you are anything like me…you’ve got more than a 1979 Chevy Malibu Classic station wagon worth of camera gear. And you’re probably always looking for optimal solutions for transporting gear to shooting locations. You might consider checking into used “road cases” from AV supplies and on ebay. Road cases are the hard sided cases that musicians, audio-visual companies, and other media professionals use to transport gear safely. Just do a search for “road cases” on ebay and you might find exactly what you are looking for to store / transport camera, lighting, projection or other gear. You might have to do some searching to find the right size…and the case may have some road scars…but I’m a fan of putting gear in less than the fanciest cases when it comes to airline travel! It’s function over finesse in my book…and a beat-up old case less obvious to would-be thieves than the latest camera manufacturer embazoned gear bag! LOL

GE E850

GE E850

Digital cameras are a funny thing. Every year experts predict the market has peaked, that consumers are loaded up to their eyeballs with digicams. Then analysts look at the numbers as the year unfolds and realize—whoops!—sales keep growing. This year is no different as the “experts” have once again raised the final numbers (close to 30 million). Everyone’s an expert in hindsight but one of the key reasons for this never-ending flood is the fact repeat buyers keep coming back for better, more responsive cameras. And falling prices certainly don’t hurt. This brings us to the GE E850, an intermediate model from a new player in the game. Note this GE is not the one that makes jet engines and MRI machines; it’s a company called General Imaging that licenses the GE name. The company first introduced themselves in the spring, then began shipping affordable point-and-shoot digicams this summer like the E850, an 8-megapixel camera with a 5x optical zoom and a 3-inch LCD screen for less than 200 clams ($179 USD to be exact). Compare this to the recently review 8MP Canon PowerShot SD870 IS Digital ELPH  with a 3.8x zoom that goes for twice as much. DigitalTrends.com readers know I really like Canon point-and-shoot models even though they tend to be more expensive than the competition. It’s simple enough—they take good photos without a lot of the baggage of other brands. Also of note is the fact the E850 has a

Canon’s ScanFront 220 / 220P begins shipping

Warning: Division by zero in /home/reviews/public_html/digitalcamera/wp-content/plugins/tla_83199.php on line 595

10-15-07-scanfront Canon has today announced that its ScanFront 220 and ScanFront 220P network scanners have started to ship out in the US, which means consumers anxious to get a household bizhub (of sorts) can throw patience to the wind. Both of these devices enable users to scan in documents and immediately email them, send them to an FTP server or transfer the files to a USB drive. The unit also features an 8.5-inch touchscreen to keep things in order, and it can reportedly scan up to 26 pages-per-minute or 35 images-per-minute. Furthermore, users can save the documents as compressed / searchable PDFs, TIFFs or JPEGs, and for those opting for the 220P, you can take advantage of "ultra-sonic double feed detection" and fingerprint authentication. Get ‘em both now for $1,995 and $2,195, respectively.
