Comparing the new Nikon Cameras

Recently nikon released the d300 and its first full frame dslr, the d3. We all know how fast the technological world moves, my trusty nikon d70, which I have been using for 3 years now, is a relic by dslr standards. I would like to point out though, that I have never had a problem with it. And I have dropped it many times, got it wet, and its been through several insanely hot Aussie summers, as well as traveled to Japan and New Zealand. I call it my workhorse (ok sometimes my baby).

Anyway, much as I love my camera, its getting to the stage where its a little dated. For a while now, I had been waiting for a 12 megapixel nikon camera, rather then upgrade to the 10 MP d200. And I got it with the d300/d3 release. However, the d3 proves to be such a beautiful camera that now I am stuck debating my longing for it over what I can afford.

In this review I will compare the specifications of the d200/d300 and d3, in case people don't understand what it means when you look at them. Though people considering buying these cameras should know all this stuff anyway.

Lets look at the nikon d200 compared to the d300.

Some Classy Argus Hardware

I have been busy getting the equipment from George O'Neal's estate ready to sell on ebay, and it has been an interesting experience so far. I'm enjoying the various cameras and photographic items, even though they are being sold. I have long gotten over the urge to collect so many things, and the experience over the past year with several estates of deceased photographer/collectors has allowed me to handle a lot of cameras that I otherwise would never see. In my case, handling these old cameras and sometimes using them for a short time is just fine, as I don't need to own a slew of old cameras. I already have quite a few (as does my daughter Marjorie), and I have been paring down my collection a bit, as well. Working with the cameras from George's estate has been fun, for the most part -- How many times might one get to handle an Ernemann Ermanox camera, or some other rare or unusual cameras? Of course, I am not going to show those here, but instead, an example of what I consider to be one of the best American examples of a rangefinder camera. Argus' C-4 was a sturdy camera, operationally and aesthetically superior to the C-3 brick. The only thing lacking with the C-4 was the ability to mount a lens other than the sharp 50mm 2.8 Cintar.
In 1954, Geiss-America Corp. designed...

Future of the imaging industry

PRESS INFORMATION:
Association of Imaging Professionals
Welwyn, Herts.

AIP-PMA conference success

The UK leg of this year's PMA Europe conferences, held in Droitwich in October, proved highly successful for PMA and its members, and also for the newly formed AIP (Association of Imaging Professionals) which enjoyed its inaugural gathering.

The conference sessions and a trade exhibition geared to cover both the retail side of the industry via PMA and image production professionals via AIP produced an exciting and extensive programme for delegates at the 2007 PMA Europe conferences.

AIP members who have transferred from the now superseded PPLA (Professional Photographic Laboratories Association), along with those potential members coming from companies involved in all aspects of imaging and image printing - all of which now qualify for membership - had their own strands of conference sessions covering fields of direct interest to them, while other sessions either related to the photo retail sector in particular or to the imaging industry in general.

The exhibition arena also catered for both aspects of the industry, with companies displaying products and services with emphasis on the different fields, or, in some cases, able to accommodate both aspects via their ranges.

Fujifilm was one company which straddled all aspects of imaging - Peter Hayward, head of the photofinishing business unit, commented that the real benefit of such an event was in being able to maintain contact with established customers across the industry, as well as developing new business...

Wedding Photographer Joe Photo…

In the latest issue of Rangefinder I read a story by Joe Photo, “From Russia with Love“. It’s about his recent mission trip to 3 Russian orphanages.

If you read just one thing from my blog this week or this year, read “From Russia with Love” because it is about real life and it will remind you of what’s important, just how lucky and how blessed you are.

A gallery of images from his trip can be viewed here.

Now, a word about Joe.

For those of you new to wedding photography Joe Photo is a rock star. When I decided wedding photography was what I wanted to do Joe was one of the people who’s work I studied (and still do). His work made me realize that shooting a wedding, when done correctly, a good photographer captures the day and the story in images. Done right, the results are art.

Here is Joe Photo’s “Best of 2006” wedding images, a stunning body of work. His other galleries are here.

I have three daughters that LOVE Hannah Montana, when she comes on the TV they can’t sit still, there’s wiggling, giggling and excitement fills the room, which is coincidently what my wife said it was like when I opened my inbox and found an email from Joe.

So, without further…
