HKCCF 2007 Showgirls Gallery with Canon EOS 40D & Adobe Lightroom

I shoot these pics on the first day I bought my Canon EOS 40D at the Hong Kong Computer & Communications Festival 2007(HKCCF 2007). Now that Adobe has released the updated version of my preferred RAW conversion application, Lightroom 1.2. I have processed the pics from that day and put together a gallery here.

All the pics were shot with Canon EOS 40D with EF 50mm f1.4, EF 85mm f.18 and EF 70-200mm f2.8L IS. All pics were shot in RAW and converted to .psd format with Adobe Lightroom 1.2 and then exported to Photoshop CS3 with minimal image adjustment (a few had slight Levels adjustment), resizing and sharpening, addition of photo frames and text and saved in jpeg format.

You can click on individual images for a larger view at 25% or original size. You can see quite a bit of fine details at this size.

If you have not read my original Canon EOS 40D review article yet, you can read it here.

Canon EOS 40D High ISO Noise Reduction Test

The 40D has a new custom function that allows you to set noise reduction for high ISO. I have made some test shots comparing shots from ISO 800 to 3200 with noise reduction off and on. The following are 100% crops, the left side crops had noise reduction turned off and right side crops had noise reduction turned on.

ISO 800

ISO 1600

This an image gallery for my 40D review. All the photos were shot in RAW and converted to jpeg with Canon Digital Photo Professional. The jpeg files were then resized and sharpened in Photoshop CS3.

Canon EOS 40D Review

Hong Kong was one of the first places to get the new 40D and I managed to get one soon after it hit the streets. I have previously written some initial impressions and did some test shots. I will leave the comprehensive technical review to publications like dpreview.com. I will be mainly concentrating on the design changes compared to the 20D/30D and new features and improvement in the 40D. After hearing many comments and questions, I hope this review will answer most of them. I will be mainly using my old 20D for comparison purposes. However, the 30D is identical to the 20D in many ways other than a larger LCD and addition of spot metering, most differences between these 2 cameras are very minor. So most of the comparison will apply to the 30D as well.

The main changes and improvement with the 40D according to Canon are:-

1. 10.1MP APS-C CMOS sensor, compared to the 8.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor in the 20D/30D.

2. 3 or 6.5fps continuous shooting, compared to 3 or 5 fps in 30D and 5fps in 20D. canon also claimed 30% greater focusing speed with the 40D.

3. 17 jpeg or 17 RAW burst, compared to 30 jpeg or 11 RAW with 30D and 23 jpeg or 6 RAW with 20D.

4. New AF sensors, 9 sensors, all cross-type, compared to 9 AF sensors only center sensor is cross-type in 20D/30D

5. Digic III image processor, Digic II in 20D /30D

6. 3″ LCD 230,000 pixels, 2.5″ 230,000 pixels LCD

The new BG-E2N grip vs the old BG-E2 grip

I have picked up my new BG-E2N grip for my Canon EOS40D today. I have made some shots and comparison with the old BG-E2 grip.

First, some pics of the new grip.

The external appearance of the new BG-E2N grip is virtually identical to the old BG-E2 grip

The main difference between the 2 grip is that, the old BG-E2 grip has no rubber seal for the battery compartment

Whereas in the new BG-E2N grip, you can clearly see the rubber seal

Canon EOS 40D vs 20D External Appearance

I have made some shots comparing the external appearance of the 40D vs the 20D. the main difference is that, you can clearly see that teh 40D is significantly bigger than the 20D. I am sorry about the quality of these pics as I have to dig up my ancient Canon Powershot G2 to take these shots as I don’t have another better camera as both the 20D and 40D were in the pics.

Canon 40D vs 20D high ISO test

As requested, I have made some 100% crops at ISO1600 and ISO3200 from both the 40D and 20D. All were shot in RAW and converted with DPP and then cropped and slightly sharpened with Photoshop CS3. the lens used was Sigma 30mm f1.4 DC. Shutter speed and aperture were matched exactly the same on both cameras.

The first shot is from 40D at ISO 1600

The next shot is from 20D at ISO 1600

The following shot is from 40D at ISO 3200

The next one is from 20D at ISO3200
