British Journal of Photography’s - Vision 2008

Just three days to go before Vision 2008 – British Journal of Photography’s annual event for aspiring pro photographers

More than a thousand visitors are expected at Islington's Business Design Centre on Friday 07 November as BJP opens the doors to Vision, its annual event for aspiring pro photographers. Vision 2008 offers young professionals the chance to get their portfolios reviewed by experts from across the industry, take advantage of one-day only deals on the latest photographic kit and hear top photographers speak about their careers.

Attendees will hear a speech by Jacob Aue Sobol, one of Magnum Photos' rising stars and the subject of this week's cover story. He won the Leica European Publishers’ Award for his I, Tokyo project, which will be published by Dewi Lewi next month and which he’ll present at Vision. He’ll also present images from his first, celebrated, book, Sabine, which documents life in an isolated Greenland community.

Simon Roberts will also give the first public viewing of his latest photo series, We English - a follow-up Motherland, his acclaimed book exploring Russian identity. This time he's focused on ideas of nationhood closer to home, taking to the road in a motorhome for six months with his wife and daughter, 'documenting landscapes where groups of people congregate for a common purpose and shared experience'.

Another keynote speaker will be photojournalist Sam Faulkner, who gained wider attention for his...

Please Try to Remain Calm……

This was the slug used in a Nikon D3 advertsing campaign in the UK in the lead up to the new full frame FX availability toward the end of last year. I found it vaguely amusing, but nonetheless, right on the nail. Thousands had been waiting patiently to get well on the new kit, so in theory at least, Nikon should do well on it.

Nikon's ad campaign, coming so close to the end of 2007, also reminded me that 2008 is a photokina year, not to mention a PMA year; it is likely we shall soon see mock-ups and prototypes of products much speculated and rumoured these past few weeks.

As Nikon is at the top of the conversation pile for the moment, what truth is in the rumour the company will shortly be showing off a new digital S rangefinder camera using the new FX sensor? They have the technology and if Epson and Cosina could make it work, why not Nikon?

Internet forum views have expressed doubts that an S(D) rangefinder model would appear with the original Contax type lens mount; rather, more likely if it does, with a Leica M mount. This would be a great pity, as one of the best features of the original Nikon S series was its serrated wheel operated focus system linked by a simple mechanism to the internal camera lens mount. In operation, sharp subject focus is rapidly obtained, leaving the left hand fingers free...

Future of the imaging industry

PRESS INFORMATION:
Association of Imaging Professionals
Welwyn, Herts.

AIP-PMA conference success

The UK leg of this year's PMA Europe conferences, held in Droitwich in October, proved highly successful for PMA and its members, and also for the newly formed AIP (Association of Imaging Professionals) which enjoyed its inaugural gathering.

The conference sessions and a trade exhibition geared to cover both the retail side of the industry via PMA and image production professionals via AIP produced an exciting and extensive programme for delegates at the 2007 PMA Europe conferences.

AIP members who have transferred from the now superseded PPLA (Professional Photographic Laboratories Association), along with those potential members coming from companies involved in all aspects of imaging and image printing - all of which now qualify for membership - had their own strands of conference sessions covering fields of direct interest to them, while other sessions either related to the photo retail sector in particular or to the imaging industry in general.

The exhibition arena also catered for both aspects of the industry, with companies displaying products and services with emphasis on the different fields, or, in some cases, able to accommodate both aspects via their ranges.

Fujifilm was one company which straddled all aspects of imaging - Peter Hayward, head of the photofinishing business unit, commented that the real benefit of such an event was in being able to maintain contact with established customers across the industry, as well as developing new business...
