It’s Speed Freaks Monday Today: Or Hands On With The Canon 5D Mark II, Sort Of

Good Morning Everybody,
I hope everyone had a great weekend. Things were fairly calm around here - busy, but calm - that is till about 12:30p.m. on Saturday when a buddy of mine called to say say his wife is having a baby, he's heading to the hospital, and could I cover a wedding for him across town starting about 2 p.m.! Hey, 90 minutes to get the batteries charged, line up an assistant, and scoot across town. But, heck, what are friends for!! Anyway, everything came together, I covered things till about 6 p.m. until another mutual photographer friend showed up to take over and cover the reception.

I called my buddy Sunday to see how the baby was doing and to my surprise, the baby had not arrived yet! You know, babies do that sometimes. Anyway, all worked out fine and we got some great images for him.

Hands On With The Canon 5D Mark II, Sort Of
Boy, am I fired up today. Why, well I was doing some DPT blog research last week - you know how it is - one link to the next link, and then to the next. That's where I found myself while cruising Crash Taylor's site after he did that very nice profile on me - here is the link again. Let me say, with much appreciation, and gratitude to everyone for the...

Canon EOS 40D High ISO Noise Reduction Test

The 40D has a new custom function that allows you to set noise reduction for high ISO. I have made some test shots comparing shots from ISO 800 to 3200 with noise reduction off and on. The following are 100% crops, the left side crops had noise reduction turned off and right side crops had noise reduction turned on.

ISO 800

Canon 40D vs 20D high ISO test

As requested, I have made some 100% crops at ISO1600 and ISO3200 from both the 40D and 20D. All were shot in RAW and converted with DPP and then cropped and slightly sharpened with Photoshop CS3. the lens used was Sigma 30mm f1.4 DC. Shutter speed and aperture were matched exactly the same on both cameras.

The first shot is from 40D at ISO 1600

The next shot is from 20D at ISO 1600

The following shot is from 40D at ISO 3200

The next one is from 20D at ISO3200

Canon EOS 40D initial impressions

I have played with my new 40D for a few days now since I bought it on Sunday, so it’s time to write about some of my initial impression on this new camera.

1. The viewfinder view is bright and is much bigger than the 20D/30D. Definitely a nice upgrade. It’s great to finally have ISO visible in the viewfinder at all times.

2. The Canon 20D makes a really loud shutter/mirror noise. The 40D is much quieter, the sound is very muted. If the 20D sounds like a gun, the 40D sounds like a 20D with a silencer on.

3. Autofoucs seemed faster especially under low light situation. Probably because all the 9 focus pints are now cross-type, all the focus sensors are much more sensitive than on the Canon 20D/30D. Previously, on the 20D, the peripheral sensors hunt a lot under low light situation, sometimes almost impossible to lock on a focus. On the 40D now, the peripheral sensors all locked focus instantly just like the centre focus point.

4. The 3″ LCD is positively a huge improvement over the tiny 1.8″ LCD on the 20D. It is probably not such a bit improvement over the 2.5″ LCD on the 30D though. Without comparing the high resolution 3″ LCD on Nikon D3 and D300, which I have not seen and are not on sale yet, I would just say the 3″ LCD on the 40D is bright and clear with good viewing angle.

5. The menu structure has changed

Canon 40D vs 20D ISO 1600 Comparison

I took a similar shot with my new 40D and my old 20D at ISO 1600. I scaled the shots to 50% and cropped them for comparison here. The first shot is from 40D and the 2nd shot is from 20D.

Canon EOS 40D ISO1600 Test Shots

A lot of people are interested in high ISO performance of the new 40D. I shot a few ISO1600 shots today. You can see them below. All these shots were processed straight from RAW file without any adjustmetn in Digital Photo Professional(DPP). The TIF files convert with DPP were then exported to Photoshop CS3. Only resizing and slight sharpening were done in Photoshop. No other image adjustment were made.
