Vintage Pentax Television Ads

I really, really love these old Pentax ads from Japan between 30 and 40 years ago. The first is an animated Moomin-type character who goes about chirping "Pentax, Pentax, Pentax." I'm really going to try to adopt him as the mascot for OK1000 Pentax Blog.

Seriously. Before the ad ends, you see an animated woman traveling on a camel. The second one, much longer because it's a few spots all together, has an Asahi Pentax Spotmatic helping this same young woman (no longer a drawing) capture snapshots of her trip around Japan. The Pentax Moomin character shows up as a print again on her travel bag. I wish they would remake that girl's ad campaign today with the K100D Super, shot by shot, because it's pretty fascinating (albeit very revealing). If you know of any more out there that are on the web, please don't hesitate to tell us all about them!

Pentax Rumors Heating Up

(Update: In case I needed to spell it out, rumor mongering is never good. So, I'm not actually giving any spoilers here. My advice is that if you're looking for a camera, Pentax already has the best stuff on store shelves right now and that any time you spend waiting for a "better" camera is time better spent using a camera now to practice shooting.)

For the last few weeks, the rumor mills have been churning with talk that Pentax might be updating its K100D Super and K10D with new models in early 2008, maybe before PMA in January.

This sort of sucks in two ways. First, it means that people could get shy about buying a Pentax camera before Christmas just so they can have a shot at a new Pentax next year, which means Pentax loses sales for the holiday season. Granted, Pentax will still get a sale eventually, but the current inventory will linger longer, which is not so much fun. Second, it means people will lose out on some pretty good deals for perfectly wonderful cameras. For example, despite what I saw on the Price Is Right this morning, the Samsung GX-10 (aka. Pentax K10D) with the 2 lens kit may be $1500 retail (she won the camera by guessing it was $1250), but it can be had now for less than $1000 if you're a good shopper.
