Recently the EOS-1D Mark III has been the buzz of various Internet discussion forums, but not for the right reasons. Over the last few months a problem with Auto Focus has come to light which causes it to either mis-focus or slightly front or back focus, especially noticeable when tracking a moving subject in Ai Servo mode. Canon has announced that it will make a new firmware release (version 1.0.9) available for download at the end of this month (or if you prefer you can have your camera serviced right now) which is supposed to address at least part of the problem. However some detailed analysis by Rob Galbraith indicates that this firmware isn’t the panacea many Mark III owners will be hoping for.

Saat melihat hasil foto yang tajam dari sebuah kamera digital, biasanya orang akan bertanya “Wah,berapa megapixel nih?”. Pertanyaan ini cenderung slaah kaprah karena ukuran sensor tidak memiliki relevansi yang erat dengan ketajaman gambar. Bagian kamera yang sangat berpengaruh pada ketajaman hasil adalah lensanya. Sekedar info, resolusi televisi VCD hanya 320×240pixel (tepatnya 352×240 (NTSC) or 352×288 (PAL)), dan gambarnya bisa tajam bukan?.

Pada prinsipnya, lensa pada kamera digital dan kamera film sama saja. Hanya saja aku pengin menulis tentang kamera digital, lagipula kalau di judul ada kata ‘digital’ kesannya lebih keren gitu.

Panjang fokus

Tugas lensa adalah memproyeksikan obyek di depan lensa ke sensor pada kamera (pelajaran SMP), lha jarak dari pusat lensa ke titik fokusnya itu yang dimaksud panjang fokus, jarak fokus, atau focal length.

Terdapat 2 jenis panjang fokal lensa pada kamera digital: lensa tetap (fixed length), dan lensa zoom.
- Lensa tetap hanya memiliki satu panjang fokus, biasanya sekitar 6-7mm. Untuk mengenali kamera ini, biasanya tidak ada keterangan ‘optical zoom’.
- Lensa zoom memiliki mekanisme yang memungkinkan panjang fokusnya berubah-ubah. Pada umumnya panjang fokus berkisar dari 6-7mm sampai 18-28mm (yang lebih besar juga banyak).

Panjang fokal yang bisa berubah-ubah ini bisa diperoleh dengan menggunakan susunan lensa yang rumit. Pada kamera digital kelas konsumer, perubahan susunan lensa ini digerakkan oleh motor. Sedangkan pada kamera DSLR yang digunakan profesional, BISA
