The Ricoh Six - A Retro Photographic Tool

It's rather fun starting the new year with a blog post. I'm sitting here in my comfy chair, watching the Detroit Red Wings play the Chicago Blackhawks in a great outdoor game at Wrigley Field in Chicago-- on the 46" HD TV. So, since today's hockey game has retro sweaters and is outside, I'll discuss using a retro camera -- the Ricoh Six medium-format folder. Riken Optical Company (later

“Happy New Year”

"Happy New Year"
©David A. Ziser

Well, the fact of the matter is -this image was not captured last night, New Years Eve, but on a 4th of July weekend. I still thought the fireworks look of this image represented the New Year's celebration too. This image is actually from the same wedding as the outdoor image I posted a few days ago. The couple wanted me to try to capture them among the wonderful Cincinnati firework display. Well, I did, but with the help of iStockPhoto and Photoshop. I had to get them properly exposed with the city lights in the background which was the easy part. I then found these great fireworks shots on-line and dropped them in. The client loved the result. So even though it's a 4th of July image - Happy New Year!!! to everybody. Camera specs; Canon 5D fitted with 24-105mm IS lens at 50mm, F4.5 @ 1/12 second, ISO 1600. Enjoy! -David

HDRi revisited, and a newbie

I was testing out my new lens (the replacement for a favorite that had an unfortunate accident) in the local rainforest. I was using it at a decent wide angle (32mm, that’s about 48mm equivalent in old-school 35mm jargon) and decided to take a EV bracketed set for some HDRI post processing, even though I didn’t have a tripod.

Original exposure

I was happy with the original image, and below are the ±1.5 EV photo also taken at the same time. The exposures weren’t so long but with the mirror movement between shots it was long enough to guarantee that I might move and my photos would be out of registration. To complicate things there was a reasonable breeze moving the ferns.

-1.50 EV+ 1.50 EV

Section of the image demonstrated poor registration Since my chief bug-bear with currently available HDRi software is image registration, this is the prefect set to test out the new Picturenaut program, which is self promoted  as a new breed of HDR tools. It is free to download, small and compact, fast and easy to use. Just running with all the default settings I got the expected poorly registered result.

Happy New Year

Experimenting with long exposures to capture fire works. My Pentax has a B (for Bulb) Mode that keeps the exposure open for as long as you hold the button down. Trying to keep the camera steady for this hand held shot was a challenge but the camera was pressed firmly against the glass window (This also cut out unnecessary reflections)

“A Quiet Moment”

"A Quiet Moment"
©David A. Ziser

This is another image I came across during a recent "hard drive" cruise of our 6 Tera-bytes of data at the studio- yep, 6 Tera-bytes and I've only been RAW the last 9 months. I have no clue how many images I have on our system, but it is quite a lot and I love looking back over some of my earlier images. This is one of those earlier images made back in my film days shortly before starting our migration to digital in 1999. Anyway, it was taken at the Phoenix - another favorite wedding venue in Cincy. The couples love the beautiful staircase here. The architecture really lends itself to some great wedding shots. Camera specs: (to the best of my recollection) Hasselblad camera fitted with 50mm Distagon lens, F5.6 at 1/20 second, Kodak Vericolor 800 film.
Enjoy! -David
