Friday: Shifting Gears - Gear Review: Canon 17-85mm IS Lens

Good Morning Everybody,
We made it back safe and sound yesterday, checked in with the team, and are in the process of getting ready for tomorrow's wedding.

Today I thought I would shift gears from my regular Inspiration Friday theme and begin a series on what's in my gear bag, why I made those gear decisions, and how I use the gear on the job. Don't worry, I'll continue to throw in an Inspiration Friday now and then too.

Oh, by the way, don't forget. We still have our contest going that I announced last week - here is the link; How many uses can you think of for the new video capabilities in the Canon 5D Mark II and the Nikon D90? I'll keep it running for the next few weeks, so give it your best shot and you might win BIG! Anyway, let's get to gear review #1

My favorite all around lens, the 17-85mm IS lens;
I shot my first wedding with Canon gear just 4 years ago. It was a Canon 20D loaner from my buddy Denis Reggie. The camera had just barely hit the market, Denis was off that weekend, and gave me his entire gear bag full of all his Canon goodies. I had a Bar Mitzvah in the morning and a wedding in the afternoon and a Master Class starting that following Monday. Needless to...

GIMP 2.6.0 Released

The GIMP developers are proud to release GIMP 2.6.0 GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It works on many operating systems, in many languages. The most important change is a switch to GEGL engine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GEGL). By default the legacy 8bit code paths are still used, but a curious user can turn on the use of GEGL for the color operations with...

“Swirls And Twirls - Stairway To Heaven”

"Swirls And Twirls - Stairway To Heaven"
© David A. Ziser

This was one of the last images I made during my wedding shoot on Tuesday. There was a narrow spiral staircase in the back of the church leading to the balcony. I pictured a cool shot taken with my fisheye lens that would accentuate the swill of the railing. Here was my plan - since the location was all curves, the fisheye lens' distortion would be disguised by the swirls of the staircase. All I needed to do was keep the subject near the center of the image to minimize her distortion. The large window supplied the illumination and by pushing the exposure to properly expose the bride I was able to blowout a good part of the scene leaving me with a wonderful, dramatic, swirling, high-key image of my bride. I love it. Camera specs; Canon 40D fitted with Sigma 8mm Fisheye, F 5.6 @ 1/50 second, ISO 800. Enjoy! -David

Thursday: Three Days Of Great Shooting, USA Today- Nikon D90 & Canon 5D Mark II, And Heading Back Home

Good Morning Everybody,
We wrapped three days of great shooting down here in Tampa and I have to say, we are all whooped. The good news is we got some great video for the Kelby Training Videos. Yesterday, was a real highlight of the week. I asked for a house so I could show what types of images we could take in the natural surrounds of a bride's home.

Kelby Training not to be undone, discovered thru a local realtor a gorgeous home for us to work throughout the morning in. I'm so stoked with the images I was able to produce. What happened is what always happens, no matter the location, was that even at this gorgeous home we had to pull out all the stops to get the right light on the subject, and that right light was just simply BEA-U-TI-FUL! I'll share a few of the images in the upcoming posts over the next few days. If you've not had an opportunity to follow any of the Kelby Training Videos, just sign-up now. It's a terrific way to learn from some of this industries leaders from the comfort of your home or office.

Hey, who gets USA Today - I know, nobody, unless you are in an airport or a hotel. Anyway, I grabbed my copy today and on the front page was one of the best composed story telling images I had seen in quite a while. It was made by Evan Vucci of...
