More mutli-photo stuff

This Photosynth is based on the very quaint Victorian Artist Society building in Eastern Hill Melbourne. This time I have managed enough overlap to get 100% synthy (a weird measure used by microsoft to record the “overlappingness” of the images). Despite being over towered by the more mundane architecture of the eye & ear hospital, this place keeps the charm of an interesting time in Australian Art. You can almost see Roberts. Streeton and McCubbin chatting on the steps.

You can see other photosynths I have created here.

It’s Revelations Monday: 8 Hours With The Canon 5D Mark II

Good Morning Everybody,
Yep, it's true - I had my hands on a Canon 5D Mark II for about eight hours this past Saturday. I mentioned last week that we had another double-header weekend. By the way, no major accidents, so I feel the jinx is over.
As it turns out, my friend, Mary Mannix, who is also my Canon rep, was in town on business Thursday and Friday and then driving on to Columbus on Saturday. I had to ask, "Could I give the new 5D a quick wedding workout on Saturday?" She said yes, dropped the camera off right before we were to leave for the wedding making me promise to get it back to her by 10 a.m. on Sunday.

What could I say, I had the camera in my hands, so I agreed. Meet with team at 11:30 for briefing and review; wedding - on site at 1:15 p.m.; shoot till 5:15 p.m.; proceed directly to country club to finish Bar Mitzvah coverage and wrap at 11 p.m.; head back to wedding to pick up my team - we leave wedding at 1:00 a.m. and head back to studio. After unpacking gear, grabbing some food and a few cold ones with everybody, I head home, recap the day with LaDawn and finally hit the sack about 3 a.m. Whew! The alarm goes off at 6:30 a.m.; I grab the camera and LaDawn and I head to Columbus

Carhartt

This exercise cost me a lot of time, at the beginning, i tried to recreate the brand name "carhartt" with many different ways and many different mixtures but they did not work. Finally, I take the idea from the Shirt (you can see above) of carhartt to create this works.

More Collage Fun

collage settings in picasa I must admit I do like photo collages, they give you the opportunity to show more than one aspect of a subject at a time. This creates a lot more interest in the viewer. The downside with collages was they can be very time consuming to prepare. Ok there are a lot of automatic photo mosaic and collage software but most just quickly deliver a boring result. My complaint was that most are very predictable and symmetrical. Then along came the new layouts in picasa 3.0, just enough freedom to play and create something unique. The collage below is the based on the frame mosaic, a square format, with a gaps between images, a related background photo, and drop shadow generated for each photo panel. All fun to do, rather than tedious.

Collage of the Sanrindham Rotunda

This collage is various view of the Rotunda on the Sandringham foreshore. Architectural subjects really lend themselves to having multiple views.

“Lines Arabesque”

"Lines Arabesque"
© David A. Ziser

When I look at this image, I love the swirling lines of the composition everywhere in the scene. Notice the curve of the rail being repeated six times by curves of arches elsewhere in the scene. The curved lines provide a great setting for this bridal portrait. I purposely positioned the bride in the upper left quadrant of the image. Notice how the dancing lines play to the composition throughout the image. This image is one I just like to sit back and enjoy. Camera specs; Canon ID Mark III fitted with 24-105 lens at 29mm, F 4.5 @ 1/20 second, ISO 800. Enjoy! -David

Gear Bag Friday: Reaching Out Long With The Canon 70-300mm DO IS Lens: A Review

Good Morning Everybody,
Well the weekend is nearly upon us and I have another double-header tomorrow. I'm going to try to be a bit more careful than the last time I did two jobs in one day. So what's some of the gear I'm going to be shooting with tomorrow. Let me tell you, on with another episode of Gear Bag Friday...

Reaching Out Long With The Canon 70-300mm DO IS Lens
I picked this lens up about three years ago as kind of a Christmas present to myself. I had seen some images over at Luminous-Landscape.com created with the lens and thought I would give it a try. The lens was image stabilized and I was looking for that 300mm going through that 1.6x magnification factor on my 30D at the time. You can do the math yourself - 1.6x300mm = 480mm focal length!!! Man, guys and girls, that's a pretty long reach.

Some of you may ask that if I already owned the 70-200mm IS lens, why did I opt for this optic. The choice was clear, I was building another gear bag for a second shooter and instead of a repeat performance with the 70-200mm IS (and to save about $500) I went with the longer lens to add a little more variety to the mix.

The first time I used the lens, I was blown away by how close I could...

The secret Sex Life of Plants

This is my Gestalt Exercise, I try to illustrate the flowers by using the basic shapes and by applying the Gestalt Theory into it to make it more interesting. However, in my opinion, it is not as close as the Theories of Gestalt. If you have any idea to help me make it better, please give me your comments. Thank you very much.

Busy time of year!

Blank Ballot
Originally uploaded by Apocaplops
I've been pretty darn busy photographically lately! I had a wedding about 3 weeks ago that I shot for a friend and I'm still working through the RAW files - over 500 of them! Whew, that's a lot of processing, gotta keep going.

I also went to a great costume party for Halloween, and was quite happy I brought my camera. I went digital, with my Canon XT, and I recently plunked down the (whole lotta) cash for a 580EXII flash, which has been oh so useful lately, what with the sun setting at like 5 pm. So there are some good costume shots here, especially if you're a big Hayao Miyazaki fan!

Finally, you may have noticed it was election day recently. I took my camera with me to take some shots at the polls, and a friend mentioned later it's illegal to take any photos there. So for the record, I didn't take any election photos at the polls, because we all know that's illegal in Michigan for some dumb reason.

I'll update with the progress on the wedding photos soon.
